Ecuador is known for having a high fishery potential and a large artisanal sector, currently facing critical challenges. Particularly, in theThe Don Juan community in Manabí, struggles with alleviating poverty, securing sate support and market access, overfishing, securing government support, and resolving conflicts with industrial fisheries. Traditionally, this community targets PenaeidPenaeid prawn species due to their high profitability using trammel nets, known for having a low selectivity. There is a high desire to find fishing alternatives or economic alternatives in the community This study analyzed the variations in prawn size and sex frequency in two different seasons; assessed the frequency and composition of bycatch for trammel nets, along with its practicality for the community; and evaluate the economic viability of creels as a fishing alternative.  To identify the current value of the traditional fishing method, this study assessed the fishing effort and catches of trammel nets in the low and high season and investigated the incidental catch composition and value to the community. In addition, to identify if creels were a viable alternative, the economic viability was evaluated. There were significant differences observed in target species composition, prawn size distribution, and sex frequency for both seasons, suggesting a seasonal variation. The incidental bycatch from trammel nets represented half of the total catch, with most species having a high value for the community. The study found that tested creels initially had lower catch efficiency, but with adjusted values, they showed higher efficiency. Further assessments, alternative fishing practices, improved regulations, and preserving artisanal prawn fisheries are recommended to support the community's livelihood. The tested creels had a lower catch efficiency and were determined not to be a good fishing alternative for the current marine conditions. Based on the results, the recommendations emphasize the need to improve fishing regulations and finding economic alternatives to address the challenges faced by Ecuador’s artisanal fishing sector.
