Marine Invasive Alien Species (MIAS) are amongst the main factors responsible for the decline of native species and reduction of biodiversity worldwide. In Ireland, large gaps exist in the knowledge base around MIAS' distribution and occurrence in coastal and nearshore habitats. Thus, as part of ongoing research, a range of monioring protocols using both traditional and molecular approaches (e.g. environmental DNA) are being developed to aid detection of MIAS and the mapping of their incidence, relative abundance and potential spread in Irish waters.
This internship opportunity will allow potential candidates to gain experience in an increasingly important field of marine science. The main focus of the proposed research will be on the curation of a tissue and DNA bank and associated database, as well as use of molecular genetic tools, such as barcoding, metabarcoding and molecular detection of target organisms by means of environmental DNA. Appropriate training will be provided. However, prior experience with basic molecular techniques (e.g. using micro-pipettes, DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis) is highly recommeded.
